I have never let my schooling interfere with my education - Mark Twain
While her Dutch father would listen to British and American sixties pop such as The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Blues music, her American mother listened to anything from Tchaikovsky and Cesaria Evora or Clannad and Ella Fitzgerald, Kendra would listen along. It is possible that due to her mother’s listening to Irish music while she was pregnant, Kendra chose to play the folk harp at age eight. When Kendra was nine years old she wrote her first song for harp and voice.
During her teenage years she developed her musicality further and at age 19, Kendra was accepted to attend the challenging Jazz Studies program at the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music in New York. Here she continued to develop her singing as well as playing the harp. During the next four years she advanced further in combining voice and harp and was taught by, amongst others, Pete Malinverni, Emily Mitchell and Dena de Rose.
After completing her degree in Jazz Voice she played in the greater New York area in a variety of settings as a singer, harp player or both. She has also worked as a voice-over artist.
In 2008 Kendra moved back to Amsterdam, The Netherlands where she has been working for the Education and Participation Department of The Concert Hall (Het Concertgebouw) since 2010. Next to that she works as a singer-songwriter and as a composer of (children’s) music.
Kendra can be hired as a performer, songwriter and educator/workshop leader.
